Understanding the Importance of Oral Cancer Screenings

Cancer

This single word can make people feel as if their lives are at risk as soon as they receive this diagnosis. However, many cases of cancer can be effectively treated when detected in their earliest stages, which is why regular cancer screenings are always recommended. This applies to oral cancer as well. Oral cancer screenings can save lives and Drs. Monica Anand, Anshuman Rawat, and the team at Westwood Dentistry in Westwood, Massachusetts, are pleased to educate patients on the importance of these regular examinations.

What is oral cancer?

Oral cancer is like any other type of cancer.  It is defined as the uncontrollable growth of abnormal cells, specifically those in the mouth and throat tissues. These cancerous cells often form in various areas such as the lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, roof or floor of the mouth, sinuses, or throat. If it is left undetected and untreated, oral cancer can spread to other areas of the body and become life-threatening. Fortunately, when you have regular oral cancer screenings performed at the dental office, you are taking steps to prevent oral cancer and catch it early enough for successful medical intervention.

What are the signs of oral cancer?

Our dentists find the following to be the most typical signs that might be indicative of oral cancer:

  • Red or white patches in the mouth
  • Persistent sores that will not heal within two weeks
  • Unexplained bleeding in the mouth
  • Difficulty swallowing or chewing
  • Hoarseness in the voice
  • Numbness or pain in any area of the face, mouth, or neck

After receiving a diagnosis of oral cancer, what are the next steps?

If an oral cancer diagnosis is made after a biopsy, the patient will be referred to an oncologist who will work closely with the patient to develop a treatment plan. This plan may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of these methods. Regular follow-up appointments are also scheduled to monitor the progress of treatment and ensure that the cancer does not return.
